Laser Expertise
Cilas has a long tradition of excellence in lasers. Most of its business in this sector consists in developing and building special-purpose lasers. In particular, its core business concerns military lasers, which need to deliver constant levels of performance over a wide range of thermal environments and under situations of intense vibrations or accelerations.
Military lasers are very different from civilian ones, in particular as regards design considerations; the specific constraints of a military environment entail opting for designs and technologies frequently very specific as regards active elements, pumping sources, and heat management modes and structures. Gradually, these design choices, which are highly structuring, mean that military lasers end up using different technologies.
Cilas has been working specifically with military lasers right from its early days. In particular, Cilas has built up broad and deep expertise in the optical and mechanical techniques required to keep laser axes stable during vibrations and temperature variations. Weight and volume minimization are also Cilas specialties, much appreciated by customers always keen to load more functionalities onto a specific platform. The configuration choices are strongly oriented around this choice.
Moreover, for the past 7 years, Cilas has been developing a proprietary technology in diode-pumped athermal structures: these specific pumping structures can be used to counter diode spectral shift, thanks to which we are saved the costly operation (in terms of volume and power) of stabilizing diode temperature. Cilas has succeeded in overcoming these challenges, and owns a number of patents covering regulation-free diode-pumped lasers able to operate under extreme conditions. |
